I'm Chris,I've never owned or put a wrench to a Harley Davidson,decided to try one before I leave the Earth....Sold a Yamaha and bought a 1990 FXR Superglide two,original owner passed away and left to Son,light pearl blue paint..105,000 miles on the odometer and two new harley davidson tires on tubeless mag wheels.No gas gauge on dash,just a speedometer,above the gas cap.
No brake feel in rear.,floor boards with forward controls,bushings inbetween floorboards rotted ,so I pulled the two halves apart and wiped off the chrome lower halves.
Has click,ordered a solinoid rebuild kit and a set of James inner and outer primary gaskets to start things off.
S&S carb with lever lifted up on full choke..click.....click......fire..high idle for awhile..push the lever down half to slow idle,let it sit there and run five minutes to warm up..then ride off.It pops bangs and hesitates for a few minutes until it warms up further,id say to full operating temp,then rides the freeway fine.P.O,said clean out carb and needles.I'll take it apart first,to determine if a rebuild kits needed.Oh,btw..sometime before he left (the earth) he carefully separated and categorized the shop manual in a large three ring binder and made a hand tooled stiff leather tote with a thin plywood back that attaches to the rear of the backrest..good stuff,the guy cared for this cycle.Did research on H.D. Models through the years and read the article 'H.D. The sweet years" before I decided to track down an FXR Evo.

Welcome to the forum! Great to hear about your project. Where in the desert are you? I'm in Palm Desert and if close would be happy to help you if you ever need an extra set of hands. Also have a decent amount of tools, jack, and such if necessary.

Welcome to the forums and harley ownership. The older FXR's were cold blooded with the S&S so let it idle a few minutes to warm up before riding, it's essential that the bikes warned up as it also helps the gaskets to seal on the old models. Too many cold engine bike rides you'll start seeing weeping base and rocker cover gaskets. Aside from that enjoy it that is one the great bikes harley built .

I'm over between Lancaster and Victorville.
I'm not sure what kind of help I may need just yet...I'm starting on the simple stuff first,carb clean,solinoid rebuild...fluids changed out..etc...to get to know the bike a bit.

Wasn't a hard choice at all.

I let it idle 5 min or so..
Want to take carb apart and have a look around in there though,between initial warm up and full opperating temperature it has severe hesitation and backfire like a semi auto .22

How long has the bike been sitting ? Run some fuel system cleaner through her and maybe check for an intake leak, pick up a can of brakeclean and at an idle give a couple shots around the manifold where it go into the heads, idle dies off you've found the problem.

Around where the pipes go in...and or the carb where it connects to the heads at both ends...I'll shoot a little brake cleaner around all those areas.
I ran some b12 chemtool through a tank of gas,didnt do diddly.

The FXR was my intention as the first Harley in my life.
