Hello HD Forum members! I am new to the forum and new to Harleys and have a question to ask the experts. I've been a long time biker and finally bought my first Harley, a '13 Dyna Switchback. I found a guy that is selling a 5" speedo off his '11 Dyna and he says he's heard different things, but we aren't sure if the speedo is locked to the ECU of his bike or not. He has found out that there are 2 different versions of this speedo, an "old version" and a "new version" and he says this is the old version that he thinks can be taken from one bike to another. Can anyone confirm whether or not I can buy this speedo and put it on my bike? I have included pictures of the actual speedo in question. Thanks!
It looks like it is part number 74774-11 per sticker.
After about 2003 is when the motorcycles started with CANbus.
The HARLEY branded speedometer locks with the VIN number after a specific number of miles.
It would seem like that unit might operate for speed and RPM but the odometer will read VIN ER...the mileage will not transfer.
Similar to newer car dashboards.
While the unit looks cool..think about it...how often are you going to look at your tank to focus on the small tachometer during a rapid shift instead of looking at the road.
Unless the unit can be reset inexpensively by a speedometer shop then it really has limited parts value.
