Are you sure the message isn't v inner instead of vin error?
VINNER is the message you get when your battery is either too low or a loose connection to the battery. Since you ran the battery completely dead it most likely is no longer holding a charge. I got this message after a winter of the bike sitting up ( on a tender) and she just wouldn't hold a charge for more than a day. Installed new battery and no more error messeges.

went out to check again and she wasn't displaying any error and tried to start for the first so I think that might have been it
Hi i m new to this forum. I have a 2015 breakout. Just install a used speedometer not knowing that the replacement whould be an issue. The VIN ERR message is always on the bottom of the sceen. After reading this post i realise the problem could maybe solve but he procedure proposed in this thread is mayby now the good one for me. Does anyone know if a procedure for my issu have been post on this forum?
Glad to be part of this forum !

It's also possible that the speedometer or ECM memory somehow got corrupted. New speedometers will accept recorded mileage from the ECM and once synched will only work with that particular ECM. I don't know if there is a way to reset the speedometer to act as new and accept a new marriage to a new ECM. The ECM is programmed to complain if it doesn't recognize the speedometer. The ECM wants to know that the Speedometer is displaying the correct mileage for your motorcycle.
OK, having said all that, the bike should still start and run even with the VIN error assuming that the battery is charged properly. I think the MPH / KPH needle should still work too.
I recently had the same thing happen on my 2015 Wide Glide.
My bike was having a hard time starting. Like it was almost frozen. It was throwing the Vin Error code when hitting the run switch but eventually would turn over. No check engine light or anything though. So one day I started poking around and found that the battery tender cable that comes out through the battery box had a cut in it and the wires were exposed. Basically touching the box. So I taped it up and put the tender on it to make sure it still worked and the battery was charging. Found that my battery cables that attached to the battery were super loose on both neg and pos. Tightened them down good and have not had a prob since. It appears that these bikes are super sensitive to any electrical disturbances. It seems like because of the vibration from the bike you have to check the cables frequently since they have a tendency to come loose. Fingers crossed that it doesnt happen again.
