I just bought a 2014 FXDL that original owner had the dealer install the standard forward mount controls option but its not comfortable for my height. I have located a set of OEM controls from another member here but wanted to see what is involved in returning the bike back to the factory mid mount controls. It also has the sundowner seat option which adds 2 inches to the seat height so I want to find a good solo seat option if anyone has a recommendation.
I am in the process of doing that now on a 2010 Street Bob. Brake side is really easy, simple take off forward controls and put on mid controls. On the shifter side you have to remove the outer and inner primaries, install the mid control shifter and then put the inner and outer primaries back on. There is a good video on how to do that on YouTube and some write ups with pictures on this forum.
Unless they left the shifter linkage that goes through the tunnel in the primary, then you will have to pull the primary apart.
As per previous posts, if the shifter linkage has been removed it's a bit of work to return to mids. Not the hardest job in the world, just a bit of a pain.
Considered the reduced reach forward kit or the foot board kit from the switchback? They may be the answer to your problems?
I called the dealer that sold the bike and installed the forward controls and their service dept told me they remove the shaft that goes thru the primary so it looks like I'm taking the primary apart. They sell a mid mount kit with everything you need but its $325. Picked up a shop manual on CL today time to read up and watch some videos.

Price up a footboard kit. Part no 50500247.
Had the same on my street bob and it was very comfortable and will be easier to fit.
