Depends on the manufacturer/group.
In all forms of Motor-sports Stage 1 typically implies a kit upgrade for performance.
Again, typically, that kit would include a combination of intake and exhaust enhancements.

The above link kinda expains things and yes Jackyl nailed it but the article refered to a carb based unit. I think things have change with the fuel injection in that it warrants more costs for less work. Maybe if there's a link to computer tuning for the do it yourselfer that may change the direction of this thread.
On my bike I went with the stage 1 parts wise it was the air cleaner and the pipes and the computer download. Now what this computer download entailed is beyond me, when I go in for my first service I will want to talk with the tech that does my service to see if he can explain it. For me I think its a fancy way of trimming the distributor and adjusting the fuel flow in a computerized way rather than a mechanical way.... time saving charge more money type of thing.

I have heard from an independent wrench that the "tuning" they do when you put new pipes on is a crock of chit. That the bike will tune itself within the first ride. Any truth to this, I wouldn't doubt it.

Stage I is an intake upgrade with a free flowing air cleaner plus rejetting or remapping. Usually involving just the Stage I cartridge download on EFI bikes. Typically this involves a muffler change too, though it is not included in the "kit".

He's wrong. The new EFI bikes are equipped with narrow-band O² sensors. They cannot make drastic adjustments to the fuel mapping. Only slight adjustments for atmospheric and elevation changes.

So, if I understood well, there is a cartridge called Stage 1 ECM? What if I'm using a Power commander instead of a Factory Cartridge? Does it work well or not? And why on the PCIII map list there are different maps for Stock and Stage 1 ECM? Just for the RPM that rise to 6200??
