I'll tell you one difference not mentioned above...and it depends how tall you are and how long your legs are. I'm 6'3". When I was at the NYC cycle show sitting on the Softail Custom, a factory rep came up and started to talk. He asked if I ever sat on a WG. When I said no, he said before you do, notice how far apart your legs are on the Custom. Then when I sat on the WG, my legs were closer together in a more natural riding position. He pointed out that the way the seats are mounted on the frames, on the Custom a tall guy's knees will hit the tank more on the fatter part. On the WG, your knees hit the thinner part towards the back of the tank. Yeah, I know it's obvious now, but it wasn't then.

Seat on the Custom looks goofy but is real comfortable. The seat on the WG sucks[:@]. Plan on getting a new one if you buy the WG.

Good Luck!

I'm retiring my '90 FXRS. Has been a great bike around town and out to California. I'm torn between a Wide Glide and Softail Custom. I've talked to owners of both who love'm. I've thought about the "pros/cons" of both but nothing really takes over the top for either. Would like to hear opinions of others. I will continue to ride around town and local 2-laners as well as out on the road.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Retireing a 1990? My 1981 is still running the two lane every weekend. My dealer has wideglides marked down $1000 under MSRP now because they are discountinued. You can get a decent deal on one.

These are the two bikes I contemplated when I bought my Wide Glide. I think the custom has the most comfortable seat of any HD I have sat on and I have always liked the oil tank of the softails. But in the end I got the bike I have always been enamoured with.

Take lots of time sitting on each one and you will begin to form an opinion as to your favorite style. Look at the details like fork diameter, rake, seating position, peg distance, and the all important "cool factor".

Take lots of time and in the end you won't regret your decision. I go to the dealer a lot and see the customs sitting there. I don't regret my decision one bit.

I hope this helps. Look at the bright side, no matter which one you choose, you will love it. This is my first HD after many metrics, and I am loving it.
