06 FXDI shifter won't return

06 FXDI shifter won't return
I had just made a new shift rod using QA1 heim joints and cold rolled steel to replace the stock ball joint rod. The bike has forward controls.
After replacing the rod, the shifter is not returning to center and I've got to move it with my foot to get centered.
I noticed the heim joints are really tight; not sure if how loose they should be but I had to put a fair amount of force into them to get them to move. I also think the overall assembly is about 1/8" longer than the original.
Any ideas on what might be the issue? If worse comes to worse I can always put the old rod back on...
