Default O2 Sensor Issue

2012 Superglide Custom
Powervision tuner
Stock O2 sensor/port

Front O2 Sensor - getting O2 Fault code. engine light stays on.

Changed exhaust from a Thunderheader back TO stock exhaust.

This is the second O2 sensor that has thrown this code in the last 2 riding seasons.

The 1st time it did it, I switched exhausts TO my Thunderheader, got the code, replaced the sensor. Cleared it and everything was fine.

Is it normal for these O2 units to crap out the minute you remove it from the exhaust? I even unplugged it so the wires wouldn't get wound up...

Also is there a special tool to install and remove these? It was a real bitch to get a wrench on it....

one more Q. Is there a cheaper alternative then buying one from the dealer...they are pretty expensive up here in Canada.

No to is it unusual. And no to is there a cheaper option. There isn't an auto parts store that carries them. The o2 sensor is just a simple Bosch but the connector is the pain

Thanks...

I was wondering if the removal tool was something universal and not proprietary to Harley

Has anyone just bought a bosh sensor and splice it to the Harley plug....

If you can get to the o2 sensor with a o2 sensor socket, that's the best. If you can't I bought the appropriate sized box end wrench and cut a slot out of the actual box end part for the wiring

The stock o2 sensor is a 12 mm narrow band (the threaded portion). I think a 14 mm open end wrench or o2 sensor socket is needed to remove, but I could be wrong on this front. It’s been a few years since I messed with my exhaust.

Thanks to all who replied. I think you dlporter are correct, its a 14mm.
Went to the local auto parts place and all they had was the 22mm socket, so I bought a cheap 14mm deep socket and I am going to cut a slot ....

who would have thought finding a O2 sensor socket would be so difficult....lots for the 18mm one that takes the 22mm socket...no one carries the smaller sized one....I guess that is why Harley can charge $300+ for the tool

So I broke down and just bought a new sensor...$75 later, codes cleared and bike is back to running the way it should....

Wish there was a way of repairing the old one, which is only a yr old....
