Doing the first tire replacement on my '14 FXDB. Wanted to get some Dunlops. Anyone have experience with either the American Elite or the K591 ... or have any other recos?
Also, I kind of want to go a touch wider on front and back? Good/bad idea?
The K591 is a real sticky tire. I ran the AE3 on my bagger and had no complaints. Great tire! Today I run the Shinko 777's on my Superglide, front and rear. STICKY STICKY TIRE! and for the price, best in my opinion. Theres a few things to consider when asking a forum this large about what tires you should run. We need some of your background to give you recommendations. I live in Los Angeles, so I get super hot summers, never below freezing, little rain, and really ****ed up freeways. I ride solo, and am heavy on the throttle, do wheelies, ride aggressive canyons, commute freeways on occasion, and every 1-2 months do about a thousand mile trip. This is in addition to the 150-300 miles rides every few weekends. Plus the occasional "off-roading" to go camping. So thats my kind of riding, and what I do/use my bike. I go through tires regardless of brand/type every about 3-4 months. 6 months if work has me traveling.
What kind of riding do you do? What kind of mileage do you typically get out of your tires? How's the weather? Do you anticipate yourself doing any type of riding in the future that you typically don't? Do you have suspension? Plan on hitting a track day or something? Let us know!
Thanks for the reply. I also live in Los Angeles. Canyon riding and PCH on the weekends and commute a couple times a week down to OC. Not the most aggressive rider (no wheelies) but like to go fast when I can. I'll probably start going on longer trips to NorCal mostly and Baja. I'd say I put about 400-600/miles a week on my bike. This is my first bike, so I'm kind of learning as I'm going.
Right on! Well at least I know what your weather looks like. Norcal is usually where I head as well. Got a long time friend who works at the Tesla factory that I go visit for the weekend every so often. How many miles did you get out of the tires you have now? And do you have a specific reason for wanting something else? Is price a deciding factor? Mileage?
The current tires are the stock HD Michelins. I've heard nothing but good things about Dunlop. I prefer performance over price—if I went through new tires every 6 months, my pocketbook wouldn't really take a beating. The bike is at about 12k miles—I don't know if the previous owner had replaced them (I would assume yes, but who knows). The tread is starting to wear thin—they've probably got a few hundred more miles on them but it's really time to swap.
