I know, another newb post!
I bought my first dyna a couple weeks ago. It came with 14" burly mini ape hangers. I purchased 14" MX style T bars to swap them out. I was talking to my local independent shop about the swap, and he made it sound like I HAVE to get new cables for any handlebar swap. Is this true???
With the current set up, I have the 14" bars, plus the 2" stock riser that holds my speedo. So that is a total of 16". The T bars will mount right on the triple so that would mean the cables would be 2" longer. Why is this a problem? Does it really matter if I have cables that are 2" longer? The new bars are 2" shorter in width, but does that really make that much of a difference?
I am getting the feeling I am being upsold to, but maybe I am wrong.
The t bars may be a it narrower. If they are the cables should fit fine. If it were me id install them with the current cables and then see what is too tight or too long. Throttle cables should be fine. Clutch should be fine. Brake too they all should be doable. Just make sure you can go full lock to full lock without binding.
its hard to say without a picture. maybe there is not enough slack already and they fear new bars would make it worse?
there's lots of guys that take shortcuts and not change cables. what doesnt get disclosed is that when they run cables with not enough slack is that they run into issues with full turns or cables sometimes pinching.
got pics? but even easier....ask your Indy since he had first hand looking at the bike.
Assuming they are Burly Narrow apes they come in at 33" wide.
Most T-Bars sit around 30" Perhaps the lost 2" in rise plus an inch or so each side in width is why he is trying to get you to switch cables. Unless you;'ve gone with a lucky daves or something at 28" width which is even more of a reduction.
If they are stock cables I'd fit the bars and at least see how the fit/route before pulling the trigger on replacements.
