Since I'm new to the HD arena, maybe you all can help. I bought a used Street Bob that the previous owner had installed V&H Bigshots Staggered. The dealer said it also had a Stage 1 done to it. When I'm riding, and I let off the throttle completely, I get alot of backfiring. Could it be that they never changed out the A/C, or could it be that they never had it re-mapped? Or, is this just normal?
Depends on who you talk to, I've had mechanics tell me it's normal and I've had them tell me the idle mixture is wrong. On literally every other bike I've had this was eliminated by richening up the idle mixture or removing the smog crap or both. But this is my first fuel injected bike and my first Harley so it's a bit more complicated.I can tell you that in almost a year it hasn't hurt my 06 Street Bob in any way that I can tell.
Like Special Ed said, there's no harm in it, but it sound like it needs to be remapped, the air/fuel ratio isn't correct. Or if you take the baffles out of the pipes, that can cause the backfire also.
As everyone said, typically this is an incorrect mapping issue...that said could also be an improperly installed pipe issue (not sealing properly at the head etc....) but you would get lots of popping and other rubbish associated with this potentially also...
I suggest getting some type of fuel management system instead of just having the dealer remap it ( a couple remaps at the dealer pay for a fuel management system) also gives you a bit more control.
I looked inside the pipes, and there looks to be baffles. Anyone else with V&H Bigshots, do your baffles look like tiny fins all around the outer wall, in a sort of spiral pattern? I can see all the way through the pipe, so it doesn't look like what I normally have seen in a baffle.
ANY slight motor mods (stage 1 kit and pipes )done on the 06-07 models (because of all the new emissions , 02 sensors, and thermo sensor ) you may think your bike is running correctlyand sounds okbut the inside is not and can slowlybe damaged in the long run , that's where the S.E. race tuner mapping and dyno come in to make sure it is running correctly and efficiently with any mod changesmade, the ECM moduleDOES NOT compensate for any changes done. Just a note 06-07 models have a thermosensor that kicks on if your bike is sitting idle for awhile , this will make your bikeidle runrough which is NORMAL because it is runningon one cylinder to prevent itfrom overheating ,as soon asfirst gear is launched and you ride off both cylinders are running full.
Mine was doing this more than I thought it should. Come to find out I had 1 nut missing on each head pipe but could not hear any exhaust leak. Installed new nuts and 90% of backfiring was gone.
My Big gun 3's only have about 6" of baffeling that you talked about so I really think this is the other 10% that occasionally happens. If I hit it hard and then let off I get some backfiring so I would think this would be unburnt fuel build upnot any lean conditions??
My bike pops like crazy but I only have V&H pipes on it. No A/C or anything else just yet. Damn thing ran lean out of the factory and I'm not worried about it yet. I'll map it whenI do the Big Sucker.
