Default Looking at a 2000 Wide Glide

15K miles. Pipes, apes, relocated turn signals, aftermarket forward controls, sissy bar, extra two up seat. Carb. They are asking 4600 out the door.

First question, decent deal? Money wise.

Next question, things to “watch out” for?

Thanks in advance. Seems like a nice bike, but the TC being so “new” in 2000 I wasn’t sure what to look for. My ‘06 ran like a top to 50K when I traded it.

Did you take any pictures you can share? If it's well cared for and properly maintained, the money sounds right on to me...

Don't worry about the TC being "new" in 2000... Many people will say the 99-02 Twin Cams are the best years the engine was made (the crank was certainly the most robust).

As far as things to "watch out" for, there's all the basic stuff on an 18 year old bike... Brakes/bearing/lines/hoses/pads/tires/leaks/sounds/smells etc... But specific to this generation are the spring-loaded cam chain tensioners. The tensioner shoes themselves can wear much faster than the later hydraulic shoes. Many people upgrade the whole cam chest (as I did), but if you aren't planning on building a motor for power, it's very economical to just change the shoes themselves (there are several longer-life options available now). You really can't tell condition by mileage... I've heard of people going over 50,000 miles on the original tensioner shoes. I opened my engine somewhere around 18,000 miles and the inner shoe had disintegrated.

Appreciate the reply. I’ll have to get some pics up this evening, it’s about a five hour drive to go see it. I think we’re in the ballpark, and I’ve got a few questions waiting on a response now. I think if it’s well cared for it’s not a bad deal, and it seems there isn’t much more than normal wear items to watch out for which is a good thing.

F86 took the words outta my mouth.

My tensioner shoes were still original at 50k but they were shot. Most don't male it that long. I suspect they were watching supplier quality (shoes and chains) more closely the first year.

The '00 still had the cam position sensor, I believe. That means a unique cam chest cover and potential failure mode. Mine has been rock solid, but I've heard reports. They're easy to change and don't cost much, tho.

If you're a wide tire kinda guy, the pre-06 bikes don't take easily to rear widths over 150.

Carbs require a bit more TLC than EFI. If you don't already know how, learn how to work on them.

Sound advice. I was not aware of the cam sensor. If it’s a relatively easy “fix” along with the other things to watch for, I’m not too worried about it. I’m buying this one to tinker on myself, and maybe very modestly upgrade. Nothing fancy or high dollar, just whatever feels right as time goes on. I’m familiar with carbs and have adjusted quite a few of them, enough that I know when to leave things the hell alone and ride. I’m actually looking for carb over EFI, I’ve had enough of them over the years. I miss the carb sound and feel, and I’ve “over” adjusted more than a few as well

The cam sensor is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. I've heard it can even be permanently removed but I never researched the details on that.

I just wanted to mention it as it's unique to 99-00. The cam covers with the correct holes for it are less plentiful. Same timing cover, tho, and that's the more common bit to dress up.

I think it’s something that at 15K I would probably see how she rides a while and leave her alone unless I felt getting in there became necessary, due to a concern. We’ll see how this one plays out, there are actually a couple TC WG’s on my radar. This one, and an ‘05 I saw after I inquired about this 2000.

If the bike is in good shape it sounds to be right on the money. Iv'd had a 2000, 2001, and now another 2001 Wide glide. There great bikes!
