I want to have my wheels and hubs powdercoated and replace the spokes with staninless spokes. THe question is should I have the powdercoater plug the holes where the spokes go in the wheel and hub or not. I have recieved mixed oppinions from people as well as different powdercoaters.
I am droping my bike off at Black Bike wheels today to have the same thing done. I can ask what they do and let you know. They are going to charge me $330 per wheel. That includes removing the wheels from the bike. Dismounting the tires. Dissassembly. Powdercoating the rims and hubs. Relace with polished stainless spokes. Remounting the tires and reinstalling on the bike.
Tuff,
I had mine done this last spring. I took my own wheel apart and re-laced them and what I had the powdercoater do was to tape off the inside of the rim where where the holes are, plugs would also work, and then I re-laced the rims and sprayed this same area with a rustoleum black for protection. They turned out great! i did not have the hubs done, only because I would force myself to install new bairings and well that was additional 100.00 or so per hub and to be honest, you can not even see my rear hub, and the front is minimal so I opted not to. I paid $90.00 for both rims to be coated. They sandblasted them first, then coated them. 4 days later and $90.00 I had them back and well I re-laced them and then had then trued up and the tires re-installed. Total cost was about 300.00, and some of my own time, being that I had never un-laced then re-laced a rim, but it really is simple especially after I found a way to cheat on the re-laceing part. Basically it was a re-install of the spokes into the rim, never removed them from the hub, used tape and wire ties to hold the general placement of each spoke.
Anyways, good luck and you will like them when they are done. Not many have done it but it looks nice.
