I'm getting a lot of info here. And I appreciate it.
Trotter: I think you're right ... the dealer must've just done the basic stage 1 download ... which for the record is fine by me. All I'm doing is changing the air intake and exhaust, surely I don't need to dyno my bike for this. But, with that said, I should be able to hit a higher top speed than 112mph? Right?
Could a head wind slow me down by 10 or 20 mph?
Psycho: a straight roll on in 6th from about 75-80 mph. All I did was crank the throttle as far as she'd go and held it there. When I hit 112 mph the speedo just bounced a bit and then I let off.
A head wind will slow you down, also a shield of any kind. The trouble with speed is you always want more. Once you spend the $$ to get your bike to go 120 you will want to go 130 and so on.......
I have a 110" motor and have no problems hitting 120
Like Train said there are a few factors... even Air density that day, wind, temp, How does the bike run under normal conditions ? There are a couple of updated flashes Available.. The dealer has a record of the download they used.. Next time your there for service I'd just mention it they may not have used the latest one, or reset the rev limiter.. I think it's set at 5700 out of the crate.I wouldnt worry about it unless your in a really big hurry... unlessthe bike is generally running bad orrealy hot, or popping,or a stumble right off Iidle..
One thing that has not been mentioned is your size and weight. If you are a large guy and sit up straight you add a lot of drag when compared to a small guy tucked in tight. 50 lbs difference in rider weight will also make a big difference. Remember that +/- 50 lbs in a 3000 lb car (1.66 % change) makes a small but measureable difference in performance so it makes sense that it would make a huge difference when it comes to a 700 lb bike (7.14 %).
Another factor is equipment like windshields, saddlebags, handle bar or fork bags. These things alladd to the overal wind drag that a bike has.
Got a 07 Fxwg, did a 103cu mild indy build, D&D fatcat pipes. 37 andrews cams, had big boys PP the heads. had the sert. took it off and put a Thundermax with Auto Tune on, much better than the sert. Set the rev limiter from 6200 rpm to 6050 rpms for a safety factor cause it winds up so fast.
1st gear, hits the rev limiter at 43mph
2nd gear hits rev limiter at 72 mph
3rd gear been to 103 and haven't hit the rev limiter.
Can go to 120 with no problem in 4th gear. I like to stop around there
A buddy of mine had the same builder do his 07 Heritage. Same pipes and everything including the build and the Thundermax and D&D fatcat pipes,
He has a airplane he flys. He used his Garmin GPS for his airplane and took it with him on his bike and went to 134mph in 5th gear.
And we both have 6 speeds.
Well, my na '03 WG with a stage 1, shield, & bags was at 95 mph with lots of throttle to go, in 4th gear. Not too sure what the top end is...but am relatively sure its over 100.
