Default Ignition fuse blowing

Hi everyone, I rode my bike into work today (09 fxdb) and it was just fine. Went to leave and nothing. Dug around a bit and the fuse for the ignition was own. Went through several fuses. As soon as I turn the switch to on it pops. Have lights but no turn signals. Took the dash off and couldn't see a problem. Is it possible the switch is bad? I relocated the ignition switch early last year and haven't had a single problem until now.

You probably have a short in the wiring to the ignition switch. I'd put money that the wire to the normally open side of the switch has rubbed on something and is grounding to the frame.

I have a 17 FXDLS but I was having pretty much the same problem as you. I tried my best to track it down and finally gave in and took it to the dealer after some 25 blown fuses. They found the main wiring harness below the seat pan, just in front of the rear fender had slightly rubbed through and would short. It was something I would never have seen. Luckily I was under warranty at the time so I got a new wiring harness out of it.

Just for a little further info: I would be riding and all of a sudden I would lose lights and gauges but everything else would still work. Once I turned off the bike, it would not restart. Blown ignition fuse. I would replace the fuse and she would either start no problem, or the fuse would blow as soon as I flipped the switch. It was not ALL the time but often enough to be problematic. It was just a tiny short that only happened with the right combination of bumps and motion.

Thanks for the replies! For clarification, I relocated the ignition to the dash from the neck, using an aftermarket switch. Didn't cut any wires, made a pig. I rode 50mi to work trouble free but when I went to go home, turned the switch and pop. Went through several fuses and gave up and trailered her home. I've been working so much I haven't even had time to look at it yet. I have a new switch coming, I'll keep you posted!

Looking at a wiring diagram instead of guessing can save a lot of time and money...

If there is a short causing the ignition fuse to blow, the short must be somewhere in the wire after the ignition switch.

The ignition switch is before the ignition fuse, so no way can the switch cause the ignition fuse to blow.

If the short were in the switch, it would blow the main fuse.

Have you had the handlebar switches apart?

I did a few months ago to change grips. I'll have to check that out.

The wire coming from the ignition fuse is gray.

Try unplugging the connector for the right hand control switches, see if the problem still occurs.

I'm a bit late to this thread. My ignition fuse is also blowing. All the information I read on this thread as been helpful. My problem is not the switches, I changed them out when I swapped out handle bars. Back to the wiring diagram it is!!

Thanks......
