Default Help! Not sure what is going on.

Hi All! I have a 2003 FXDWG. Well I changed out the cam tensioners with the screamin eagle hydraulic kit. Put S&S lifters, 509 cams, SE adjustable tapered push rods. Everything seemed to go well. Started the bike and it sounds nice. Idle is low around 850, so I will need to adjust that. The problem is this. I took it easy around the block. Things seemed fine. I have an oil pressure gauge and it reads higher than expected. 15psi at idle and 45 running down the road. It sometimes bounces above 50 so it may be hitting the bypass. Other than that it was running well. Took it out on the open road and ran it through its paces. While running around 55-60 or higher it has an occaisional loud back fire. Scared me at first. Sounded like it came from the front of the bike once in a while. I had pulled the front exhaust to do all the work on the bike and replaced the exhaust gasket. Do you think a leak at the exhaust manifold could cause the loud backfire? When I arrived back home the check engine light came on intermitently and then went out. I check the error codes and there is no errors DOCLr through all the settings. I'm worried now that something is wrong. Any ideas???

The check engine light doesn't come on at all anymore. Not sure why it flickered earlier. The oil pressure does read higher now. Is this because of the better oil pump in the SE kit? It rides around 45psi. Sometimes in 2nd gear acceleration it bounces above 50PSI and then settles back down.

If you installed the hybrid cam plate that also has an improved oil pump, pressure/flow. Did you upgrade the carb or fuel management?

Sounds like it is in serious need of a tune up. Since you changed CAMS everything from your timing to your air flow have changed....

Oil pressure is about what most engine builders consider ideal!!

The oil pressures have settled in after riding the bike. At idle it is 20 PSI. Above 2K RPM it is 44 PSI. Of course they are a bit higher when the bike is cold. Based on what I'm reading and hearing from others this is where the pressures should be. I do not have a fuel management system on the bike and have the stock CV carb. The bike starts great and idles very well. No popping or backfiring at all when riding. The 509 cams really seem to work well with a mostly stock TC88. I'm really happy with the results. Just a bit cautious about the oil pressure as I did the work myself to change the SE plate, cams, lifters, adj pushrods. Bike seems to be running great at the moment.

Sounds like your bypass spring and plunger seating is OK. Many suggest checking even aftermarket AND SC cam plate for proper bypass operation.

I built my own test plate and precision ground plunger seat.

Sure wish I had that test rig when I was putting the SE cam plate in. It would have been nice to check the valve crack open/close points. I did remove the bypass valve and cleaned it up with emory cloth. When I removed it initially it did not want to come out. After cleaning it up the valve operated smoothly. Just wish I had a test rig to check the actual open/close points... Did you buy that test plate?

I made my own test fixtures and ground my own plunger.

It sounds like yours is working perfectly.

Good thing you deburred your plunger for smooth operation.
