I was amazed at how corroded and rusty all the steel parts were inside the tank, even considering how long the bike sat. I realize that the bike needs to be run more but does going to the trouble of buying gas with no ethanol in it reduce this issue?

Yes. Ethanol is an oxygenator. Rust is Iron oxide. Plus, the ethanol absorbs water from the air. If the bike has to sit, keep the tank full to minimize the air, and use ethanol free gas or treat the gas with a stabilizer.

Worst case is putting some grinding media inside the tank, cover up all holes as best you can, then put the whole tank in a paint shaker. Fill the tank about 15-20% full of media. Let "shake" for an hour, then check the insides for progress. Like I said, this is a last ditch effort. Good luck getting all the media out. It needs to be dry for the media to expel.
Despite how rusty all the steel innards were and how much rust debri was in the bottom of the tank, the tank itself was not that bad. Obviously the tank inside is coated with something because it is steel and barely rusty. I decided not to disturb that coating and assume that if i scrubbed the loose rust in the very bottom where everything collected and vacuumed and cleaned out the tank that we should be good. I decided to use gasoline and rags to wipe everything out and rinse the tank. That way, no flash rust from water based stuff and I didn't strip the inside coating with a solvent. Tomorrow all my new parts arrive so well see how the minimalists approach holds up. I have to replace everything inside the tank.
So I needed to clean the tank, replace the fuel pump, filter, regulator, tank quick connect/hose, and fuel level float. I did not touch the external fuel hose or the injectors. I put in fresh gas of course. It's running great. I need to change the spark plugs tomorrow and I should be done.
