Default Another Exhaust Question...

I have had a few Harleys over the years but have never done many mods expect for the typical chrome and bolt ones.
I wanted to give my new FXDC a deeper rumble with some Tone... Can I add SE slipones, either 1 or 2's without re-jetting the carb or do I need to do both ?
Should I also add a new breather kit ?

Thanx, I kinda researched this in the archives but got no definitive answers

The answer is - maybe! .. Try the slip ons and see how it runs. If it starts popping on decel, runs hot or too lean, you'll need to rejet. Chances are that it will run fine. If you add a new air cleaner, you will have to rejet.

Rode the bike today for about 80 miles with the new SE slipons and no down load, with stock A/C.Made a big differrance in throttle response througout the power band.I have not had the time to pull the plugs to check their condition yet. So far I am pleased with performance, did get a occasional pop when backing off the trottle, but not a consistant one, this occured throughout the gearbox range.Sounds great and not obnoxiously loud.I do plan on adding the SE/AC in the future, but still need to clarify with H.D. on what needs to be done to the ECM(download, race tuner,PCIII,etc, etc.)
Conclusion at this point,,runs great so far, but I suspect the down load may add a little more crispness in throttle response.
I will be checking with local H.D. tech for more info on what this down load will accomplish.

Hope this info helps.......Ride SAFE.

I have an 05 FXD, that absolutely had to have some growl added to it. I added the SE I slip ons ( which I am told are slightly louder than the SE IIs) the A/C kit ( also SE) and the dealer had apparently already done the rejetting prior to delivery ( since factory setting is just too lean to live with). The difference is remarkable. the Bike has substantially better throttle response, it has enough pull to lift the front end in third gear, and the sound- which is purely subjective- makes the whole program work. Without the growl, it just wasn't a Harley. So, long story short, I strongly reccomend doing all three, pipes, A/c, and rejet. Completely changed the charachter of the ride. As a former knee dragger, I always tried to shy away from loud pipes since I did not want too much enforcment-based attention. But since getting the pipes, i have become a believer in the loud pipes save lives theory. It just gives the bike even more presence.

Hey all, I am a new owner of a 2000 superglide sport and it is soo very quiet. And like someone stated earlier it does not seem like a Harley being so quiet. So what is the rough cost for getting all three of your recommended mods done. (pipes, A/c, and rejet) may be a good winter project for me as well if the price is not too steep.

thanks

Totally agree re the thing about a Harley having to make some noise. It's what God made them for

I had a V&H Classic 2:1 fitted at my '05 Dyna Sport's first service and the bike goes beautifully now; much smoother too - only problem is that it does backfire/bang on the overrun like a complete b*stard and makes one hell of a racket at full throttle. So much so I'm really thinking of putting the OEM headers back on and fitting the HD 'slightly noisier than stock' slip-ons. Other alternative is a V&H Pro Pipe HS but this could work out more expensive than I'd like (and I'm saving for a Vanson Stallion leather jacket).

I do like the 2:1 sound though - some folk don't, some do. Horses for courses really.

Jake,

You will probably have no problem with just the pipes. HD's catalog states that no other modifications are need if you just add pipes. If you only add pipes, you will not notice much of an increase in performance however.

I always suggest adding the SE or Ness big Sucker air cleaner to the mix and doing a jet job. All of this is relative easy to do, and with all three ingredients, you should see a pretty good jump in seat of the pants performance.

The Ness big Sucker or SE air cleaner will only add about 140.00 to the price, and a jet job, if you do it yourself costs almost nothing, 10 or 15 dollars.

If you need any help, PM me. I will help all I can, and can send pictures. If you will get a Service Manual from your dealer, you will find all the info you need to do the job.

Regards,

Bill

I have the Carb Version of the Super Glide Custom.
Just doesnt sound like a Harley without the Growl...
I would love any direction you can assit me with, the pipes are easy, rejet sounds easy and anything you have to point me in the right direction would be awesome.

Thanx Again

Jake

Harpoon, as Bill noted above I spent about $140 on the SE Air Cleaner Kit, about 225 on the SE I slip ons, and nada on the jets (but memory says these run about $4 each).

Jake, I listened to the recommendations I read here ( archives can kill insomnia) most of whom said it's up to your ears;and to the advice of the Parts guy at my dealer, who then took the time to walk me around their lot and shop and let me listen to a variety of pipes ( both HD and aftermarket) until i found what i liked. I reccomend this approach as well- may not satify your urge to bolt stuff on this weekend, but is logical.

I will post the results of my new Corbin saddle after I get some miles on it- so far I like it but I have yet to get more than 45 minutes at a time, which is about 30 minutes short of where I thought the stock seat crapped the bed.
