After stupidly abandoning my absolutely perfect in every way, 2016 Low Rider S for various 2018+ softails, and never really feeling the love for any of them that I had for my LRS. Even the 2020 Low Rider S is a better machine in every way, but it just doesn’t feel like my Dyna did.
However I’m wondering if it’s just me. So I’m looking at a 2017 Low Rider S at my local dealer this week. Going to take it for a ride, just to get a feel for it. That said, I probably wouldn’t buy it. I’d likely pick up a 103 Low Rider or street bob as a starting point to build up. Do my cosmetic and suspension stuff myself and probably get a FuelMoto big bore kit or similar. Definitely want something with ABS, which is harder to find on the Bob then the LR, but the Bob is more blacked out which is where it’ll go so may be the better choice. I can add a Arlen Ness big brake rotor on the single disc.
Probably will keep the Softail S for now, until at least I finish the Dyna project and don’t have a need for it. Who knows.
I traded a Sportster for a heritage, years ago. Put few miles on the Heritage, and missed the Sportster. Love my Fat boy seems to be a good fit. But Im always thinking about something new.
Out of curiosity: what is it about the new version you don't like?
Nothing really. It’s much faster, handles much better, and looks better then the Dyna. It sounds illogical but there is just something different that I can’t put my finger on. I just haven’t bonded with it (maybe, yet) the way I did with my Dyna LRS. I can’t really explain it. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the 2020 LRS, it’s literally the best HD I’ve ever owned. It’s just missing something I can’t put a finger on. Maybe it’s the counterbalance vs. rubber mounts (this might be it as my M8 Road King I much prefer over the Rushmore Road Glide I had). Maybe it’s the way the M8 sounds, Cant put a finger on it.
I’m just not sure. That also why I want to ride the LRS (Dyna) since it’s been 2 years. Maybe my memory isn’t what I think it is.

Oh, and happy Easter!
Couldn't have said it better myself

I wish I had one instead of the Bob, would love to have the cruise control, seems like not such a big deal for you folks in the east as it is appreciated out west, plus the eaze of going 117" or flat out opting for a 124".
Ohlins in back and one of those super fancy inverted fronts like on this fellow's bike (if the link works) and for God's sake, change the color! Everyone leaves them black, personalize the damn thing with some cool bitching paint, even if it's just a one color change like a green or blue!
The new m8s are great bikes, and are better in every measurable way than the dyna but they do feel they are lacking some soul or something.
I havent made the trade but I've demoed several m8 bikes and I'm always happy getting on my low rider when I leave.
a good friend of mine who has ridden Harleys for many years and owned many HD's bought a 2017 Limited new and absolutely hated it he put about eight thousand miles on it and sold it and bought a low mileage 2007 ultra and loves it, he owns a softail custom and a heritage both older bikes and says no more M8's for him!!
as for the Dyna it is the bike I have the most fun on but probably put the least miles on!! I will always have a Dyna in my stable!!
It’s just missing something I can’t put a finger on
Low Rider DNA. I've said it before. You have or had a FXR and a Dyna. I will got out on a limb and say the 77 to 82 Low Rider started it all. You got a bike, while completely capable, that has no DNA to it's traditional forefathers.
I'll make another suggestion - find a 16 or 17 FXDL and keep it stock as much as possible. I put FXDLS rear shocks on mine, detachable windshield, sissybar and luggage rack. Enjoy it for what it is. I know this is hard for you to do. (LOL)
A while back I test rode a new Sport Glide and decided on the way back to the dealership to keep my Street Bob. On that day the new M8 softail just didn’t feel right although I do like my 2019 M8 Ultra Classic for touring.
