I've been running an open SE air cleaner for about as long as I've had my bike (3.5 years) and have never had any problems. The bike has been ridden in bucket o'rain downpours, bugs, dust and everything else I can think of and I've never had any problems with the open air cleaner and water/bugs or other crud.

In the old days for rain we put tinfoil over the front and top with a rugger band and let it rain.

You're living in a pipe dream if you really believe this.

Goretex allows evaporating moisture to escape but .... Heh, nevermind.

If you deal with it everyday, like I used to, then you surely have torn down carbs, like I used to, and found bits of dirt and even sand sometimes clogging your jets. Oh wait, you said they don't do that.

I've been here, done this. I've done my own testing on high-end race quads. I know how this crap works inside and out. It's so simple that some people just can't get it I guess. You get more air, but you WILL get more dirt into your intake too.

Maybe I am off base but if there is dirt in the jets you should check the fuel filter. I have run K&N's on several of my vehicles and never had any dirt or grit on the inside of the aircleaner or throats of the carb. I should also add I have never used them on any off road race vehicles.

I have run K&N Air Filters on most of my cars for years. They are not off road vehicles, but I live on Long Island, and sand gets everywhere. During the winter they spread it over the roads with salt after it snows. I have found no dirt/sand/road grime in my carbs or MAP sensors. The air box of my wifes's WRX was filled with salt and sand after this winter. None of it (that I could see) got past the filter. Is it possible that dirt is getting around a filter that is not properly sealed?

As mentioned before, sand in the jets is from people not wiping it off the tank before fueling.
