Should I be worried about bugs clogging up my air cleaner if I run with it open? I've taken the football cover off but it's a b!tch to get the bugs out after a ride.
If it's a K&N filter... leave 'er alone. They work just as well dirty as they do clean. Look at those desert racer cars with exposed K&N filters, they have about an inch of dirt caked on them by the end of the race and they just keep on filtering.
I have an exposed K&N filter and I just leave the bugs there. I clean it every few months or so.
If you can't stand the look of a few bugs, then clean as often as you like.

Yes, but be advised that those same baja race vehicles get rebuilt after every race.
I've already been through this with a few atv's. The open K&N style filters absolutely suck in more sand, dust, bugs, and muck than a typical paper or foam filter.
That's the trade-off. They are more porous to allow more air in (and dirt). All anyone has to do is hold them up to a light source and you do the math.

What does translucency have to do with filtering ? Nothing. Goretex will prove that.
More porous ? Yes it is, but will several layers that create an overlay to the media. That is also why you can see through it.
Do they suck more dirt in then a paper or foam? Nope.
I was more concerned about water than bugs, but I guess it is a valid question now that i think about it.
You'd have to get a whole lotof bugs on that thing for it to ever be an issue. Maybe if the they build a hive around it over the winter you might have an issue.
