JMHO but 60 MPH in 6th gear is way too slow to be in 6th gear. I try not to shift into 6th until I get up to 70 MPH or so. Even at 65 MPH in 6th I feel like there's no power and the engine is struggling. There have been numerous time I even forget to shift into 6th on the highway - bike runs great at highway speeds in 5th.
BTW - If I am not mistaken the gear ratio on the 6 speed HD tranny's, gears 1 to 5, are the same ratios as the comparable gears in 5 speed HD tranny's (I sure someone will correct me if I am wrong). 6th gear has a lower ratio. That being the case there are hundreds of thousands of HD riders running their 5 speed trannys at ALL highway speeds with no issues. Your bike may sound like it rev'ing in 5th speed at 60 but you are only turning around 2800 RPM's or so.
60 is too low in 6th for my bike ('06 Bob) - a senior mechanic at one of the local dealers rode my bike about a year ago and he thought the motor lugged a bit at 60 in 6th. I wind it out a bit more til I shift up to 6th, usually not until 65 or a bit higher. I downshift to 5th a 60 and it seems to be just fine.
thanks everyone for the info i am gonna try out the higher speeds in lower gears just to get the feel for it. anyways i guess if anything does happen. thats what i have the warrenty for.
i see what your sayin DYNAMITE but 5th gear at 60 it just seems like its revving to high especially around 65
How many miles you got on your bike bobber?
I've got about 4400 miles on mine, and as the miles keep going on, I find the engine loosening up ever so slightly. When I first got it, I found myself shifting into 6th at about 60-65mph, but now I don't even think about hitting 6th until somewhere between 70-75mph.
May be the samewith yours.
Or you might just need to get used to runnin' at a higher rpm. Force yourself to run at 65 or so mph in 5th for a while and see if you don't find the bike "settling" in to it.
