Default Tires

I have a 2016 Street Bob with 14,000 miles. Going to replace tires at next service. I live in Central Indiana and don’t ride overly aggressive. Rarely ride in rain. Suggestions between Commander 3s or Dunlop American Elite?

Michelin is my favorite brand of auto tire, have run nothing else on the wife's cars, trucks, SUV's for about 30 years(I run other heavy truck tires on my truck). That said, I haven't been that impressed with the reviews on their motorcycle tires.

About 3 out of 4 of the people I personally know that have run them switch to something else after 1 or 2 sets of Commander's. The other 25% swear by them. I have not ran them myself so that is all I have to go on.

I have been running American Elite's since they came out and I'm plenty happy with them. I get good miles out of a set, they handle good on wet road, and I can drag floorboards/pegs in the turns. They have good grip and they do well on tar snakes and highway grooves. Myself, I have no need for anything different.

I do have cheap sticky tires on one of my Sportster's that I use "for spirited rides of under 25 miles" ( ) but they only last about 4,000 miles or less.

If you search back a little there was a thread about the Michelin's a couple weeks ago on here, they seemed to have a bad batch or something.

I've got a couple of dyna's. For years I've run Metzler 880's or 888's but I'm always up for trying something new. A few years ago I tried the Michelin Commander II's on my '07 and absolutely hated them. I know lots of people here on the forum like the Commanders but I disliked them so much I replaced them long before they wore out. Mostly I thought they had very vague handling characteristics and were TERRIBLE on tar snakes. YMMV.

I currently have a set of American Elites on my '12. Good tires, I like them a lot. That being said when I replace them this fall I'm going back to Metzlers.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Had Conti Trail Attack 3’s on the roadster. Really liked them, however the roady rear was 18”.

Still have Shinkos on the 07 Sporty, amazing tires for the $. The wet grip is as good as any other tire regardless of price.

Really like the cruise techs on my low rider, grippy right out of the wrapper.

The only other tire I’ve used on the HD’s are the stock Michelin. On the sporty, I will stay with the Shinkos.

I have typically ran Dunlops on Harleys. I am switching from Spokes to Mags on my Super Glide next week. I just took delivery on a set of Shinko SR777 tires yesterday to install. I’ve had good luck with their 705 tires on a Couple of Adventure/Scrambler bikes now.
