If the previous owner modded the carb with a kit such as Dyno-Jet, this could add to the problem of over rich. With a kit the hole in the vacuum piston is enlarged and the spring is replaced with a lighter spring. I think the main jet is also changed. In 2004 I read an article written by Joe Minton on tuning the CV carb. He didn't recommend changing any jets, drilling holes, or changing springs. He did write about removing the plug on the mixture screw, seating it lightly and back out about 2 1/2 turns. He suggested using a Sportster needle, p/n 27094-88. I added to #4 brass washers on my needle and put it back in the vacuum piston (the Slide) in the carb. The jet stayed stock (#45-slow and #190/195 main). I did this change with my stage 1 mod and still have it with the stage 2. The bike runs really strong and the plugs are clean. This my experience.

Thanks for the info, I’m going to look at the carb next weekend and see what’s what, appreciate it. Any idea what size brass washers you used?

For Fitter1911, the brass washers are .050" thick. I picked them up at my local ACE hardware, just ask for the #4 brass washers. Use two of them under the needle. I did try the Sportster needle trick, didn't work for me. Be careful when you put the vacuum piston back in that the rubber goes back into the groove. Maybe smear petroleum jelly in the groove , install the piston and put the carb top on carefully as to not to pinch the rubber. If you visit Nightrider.com CV Tuning it explains this pretty good, keep in mind it's talking about the 80" EVO. Do not drill out the hole in the piston, The TC 88" is fine.

@Fitter1911 what size jets did you end up going with? I'm in the same boat on my T Sport.
