2000 FXDX Triple Tree Q's

Short and sweet, my bike has a broken steering stop on the stock lower triple clamp. Can I grind it down and reweld it back on without worry of structural integrity? Will this make the triple clamp unsafe or brittle? I plan on getting a new one, but frankly don't have the funds at the moment.
When I do get a new one, do I need to know anything in particular for a 2000 FXDX? It's the same as other FXD triple clamps if I'm not mistaken. I believe only the fxdxt has a different set of trees.

Remove the boss and drill / tap for cap screw. Plenty strong.

Cap screw? I'm not familiar. Are you saying just tap a whole and put a bolt in it?
Edit.. I'm an idiot yeah that's what you're saying. Sounds good. Might try to do it on the bike.

SHCS 6 point socket head cap screw Grade 8 I would suggest 3/8"-16 if you have room.

Stainless or alloy, and I'm assuming I'd want a handful of washers, or a spacer if I can find one, under the head?

Use a 3/8"-16 x 3/4" fully threaded screw...No washers needed

SS is around 70,000 psi I would think would be OK
