Default trimming the rear fender

i'm new here to this forum. i currently live in elizabeth city north carolina. i'm in the coast guard. i really like reading everything on here. lots of good advice and funny reads. anyways, i made a tail light/license plate side mount bracket to attach on the left side of my rear axle so i can get rid of everything on my rear fender. only problem, i ride an 07 street bob and where the stock tail light sits there is a HUGE hole in the rear fender. to get the custom bobber look i'm going for i need to trim my rear fender back. i feel confident in doing it, however i was just looking to see if anyone on here has done this similar project and has any advice or procedures on how they completed it. pictures, stories, tools needed, anything would be very helpful. thanks!

justin

I've done a bunch of them and have my own preference for sure...A good air Die Grinder.
It's easy to work the metal like you're painting with a brush.
The hard part is getting that rolled edge back.
You don't really need it but allowing for the rolled edge on the back area is a nice touch.
I'm sure Jesse James has a few tricks for that but I use the same old skool hammer and wrench methods for it.

I'm sure it will turn out fine and remember you can still drown in fifty feet of water.

Good Luck

Here's one that I did:

I cut it right above the tail light hole:

I had mounted my turn signals to the fender, right behind the shock. the vibes caused the fender to crack so i had to trim it all the way to the front of the fender:

I didn't really like the gap in front of the shock so i sold the fender to a member on here and did this instead:

Hey do you still have to be 6' tall or better to join the Coast Guard or did they do away with that?

pfb - You have good taste my friend!

My bike is a 2001400SX converted into a woods machine...I just converted it all to new style plastic by swapping out the subframe to a 2005 one.
I have all my plastic and the big tank for sale if you know anyone looking.

I bought the bike in 2004...it was a leftover. Untill this year, I only put 2 rides on it! Nicest 2001 you could find...let me know if you need any plastic.

I'm selling from the tank back and it is in great shape. Subframe andairbox also.
