I have a 2002 Dyna Wide Glide. I recently had an engine guard installed. While I am fine with the overall look, it attaches to the lower frame with U-bolts. Picture is not my bike but you get the idea. I was thinking of putting a chrome cap nut or acorn nut on there to dress it up. The trouble is I do not have much thread to get something on there to hold. Less than 1/8" I'd say. About half of what the sample picture shows.
My second thought was some sort of nut cover. Do they stay on with the vibration? Another idea was the lug nut cover. While a standard lug nut cover is too big, does Harley or anyone make something similar for a small nut? Enough to cover the threads sticking out? Yes, I could go to all the trouble of replacing the U-bolts with ones with longer threads. I don't have a torque wrench so I am just looking for a quick & easy fix.
The rest of the bike has lots of chrome and this area, albeit small and "hidden" looks unfinished.
If you have enough thread to accept the nut that`s on there now. you have enough to remove it and put on an Acorn nut .
Use washers if required to make sure bolt end doesn't bottom out in the acorn dome
I like the chrome acorn nut idea the best. I think as long as I get a good quality one, I'll just have the dealership do it next time I'm in to torque it correctly. As long as they do one at a time, no need to remove the bar.
Scuff that "inside" corner of the lower mounts with sandpaper & hit 'em with some black epoxy appliance spray paint to clean up the look of the mount. I did that & the black heat shrink on the u-bolts. Never thought about using acorn nuts. Need to check what size those nuts are & fix that.
I decided to go with the chrome acorn nut idea. I apologize, I took the pic before I washed the bike I found them at Grainger and had just enough thread to attach and tighten. I used Loc-Tite to secure. Have not had any issues.
