Default trouble starting/grinding noise

Good evening, I bought a 2008 dyna superglide FXD about a month ago. I have rode it for about 300 miles and it has ran great. Recently, its been giving me issues starting. Half the time it starts the other half of the time it doesn't and just makes a loud grinding noise. The bike only has 20k miles on it and is in pristine condition. I recently put a new battery on it and the battery is full charged. Any ideas what this could be? I tried to attach a video but it won't load for some reason. taken from a iPhone.

Thank you!

I'll bet it's the compensator. 2008 still had the crappy one. You have some options depending on what you want to spend. You can get the screaming eagle ones with the newer rotor for around 370 or so from one of the online discount dealers. Then there's the one from baker drive train...they're proud of their stuff but it is good stuff...around 500 plus the newer rotor that you can find for around 90 bucks. Darkhorse has a nice setup...again they're proud of their stuff and again it is great stuff. Around 530 but i think they have a package deal with the rotor included. You may or may not need a new primary gasket...I've reused mine about 3 times now but if I'm working on someone else's bike it gets a new gasket. Inner primary has to come off or some people grind the lip off the primary case so they can get the rotor off without removing the inner primary...definitely saves a bit more work, definitely a personal decision on whether or not to modify the case. You can use a solid sprocket...its alot cheaper but not recommended with a stock crank. Hope that helps. You ca

Could it be just a bad starter clutch? Can you tell where the noise is coming from?

Im thinking its a starter (Bendix spring) Easy to replace the starter its a R&R job.

Sometimes hard to determine whether it is the compensator or the starter clutch, but...

The starter clutch is much cheaper, and easier to change.
