I make wierd noises when I first start, too...it just happens. I'm old and have a lot of miles on me, and honestly, if I woulda known I was gonna live this long I woulda taken better care of myself.

As for the bike, could be any number of things...like maybe where the engine is in the compression stroke?

Maybe starter beginning to go? Or weak battery? Not enough juice getting through to get the pinion gear out and spinning.

Have your battery tested under load. A weak battery is often the cause of this being intermittent.

Next would be a bad compensator. By 2011 most OEM compensator were the newer S&S, which is now standard on all models (for a reason).

Could also be in the starter itself.

If it has a built motor and heads that could have something to do with it as well assuming there are no compression releases. You didn't really give much information.

+1. Compensator is recoiling after the compression stroke. It might need new springs.

My 09 Heritage did the same thing. I just put in a new SE Compensator. Clunk is gone. I had a nice piece of aluminum missing from my inner primary by one bolt hole from the chain slapping it. Problem solved.
