Default Noise from starter area when starting

I got a 95" with about 10.5:1 with compression releases. When I try to start it I get a wicked clanking noise and it momentarily stops cranking when it happens for a split second then starts cranking again. I got the starter rebuilt last year because of this issue and ultimately killed it. I've replaced the compensator and still the noise is there. Any ideas?

I know this may sound silly, but have You checked Your Battery? If not, have it load tested.

The starter was rebuilt cause i think whatever was causing this took out the starter clutch and the noise was there before and still there? Could something with the jack shaft cause it? It's really the only thing left.

Sounds like you may have a tooth or two broken off the Clutch Basket...

I don't think so, there's no way I wouldn't have noticed that. But I'll check it to be sure

Default I'd check the

spark timing during startup in the 750 rpm - 1000 rpm range. Timing may need to be adjusted especially with the higher compression.

It's carbed. I have an adjustable box in it and its set pretty conservatively due to pinging
