To provide continuity of a path for ground, different parts of the bike are connected to each other via a ground wire. It's possible the grease in the neck bearings do not provide a good ground between the forks and the neck on the frame. you might get a ground but it's also possible not a healthy good ground.

Grounding wire is there so the head bearings don't get pitted out from playing intermittent contact and arcing. That's the actual engineering behind that. Wiring harnesses today have ground wires built into them, older bikes didn't. Relied on frame ground for many things, that wire was very necessary.

I was going to say, none of my bikes use a frame ground for anything on the forks at least. Everything has a dedicated ground wire.

I agree. The headlight mounts on most trees. And that grounds it there. But there is a ground wire with the power wire bundle going back towards the battery. Most pull that ground wire off there on frame just back at the end of the tank.

They are correct that one never wants a ground thru a bearing

However, I did think first poster saying the big eye was no longer attached to anything. And I assumed it had once been a ground for passing lamps or something that had been removed.

That wire I did not believe it to be the ground for the trees to the frame neck. It's not long enough nor have I ever saw a Harley with the ground there.

However, not saying there not.

So when Dan went on attack mode, answer came out were eye went. Interesting since I have a tac up high above the risers for tac but it also has a ground wire. My Softail doesn't have riser bushings either however and would not need a bridge ground wire.

My confusion was I thought the problem was just hooking the little eye to a new tree.

Harley's didn't use a wired ground pre 96 I think. All the lighting relied on frame for a ground path.
It only took them 93 years to figure it wasn't a reliable path for ground.
That wire is the ground path to the bars for the front turn/run on the bars as the riser bushings insulate the bars from the trees.
If OP's bolt is hitting the riser bolt it's too long.

My ‘04 has the ground wire. I figured it was there for a reason, so I left it there.

Curious, does yours come from the harness or is it jumper like the OP's?
