This has been interesting to follow. Who would have thought that an incorrect oil pump o-ring could kill 50 (or more) hp? Well, besides Max and 98hotrodfatboy...
Glad it was an inexpensive and relatively simple repair at least.

Thank you but Max really does deserve most all the credit.. I myself never thought that sumping could cause that much of a decrease in power.. That was massive but then again he wasn't getting any oil return hardly...

Man, waiting for parts is KILLIJNG ME! The gasket set is supposed to be here tomorrow and the new pump on Wednesday. I also ordered replacement black sleeves and keepers for the pushrod tubes, but I don't know if I can make myself wait for them. S&S is right over in WI so maybe if I'm lucky they'll show up by the weekend...dammit, this week is going to be nice, and I just missed a beautiful weekend also.
Hopefully, I'll get that stump pulling, low down torque I was expecting the first time now that the crank isn't half submerged in oil.
It can happen to anyone. Blue run is the second pull with a 131 kit in my trike. made less than stage 1!
Red run is after cut oring was replaced- now I can start tuning...
In case you are wondering where all that power goes, it goes into the motor.. 10 second run and 40 hp loss means you just dumped 30KW of heat into the motor for that run.. The oil is getting that power as heat and it's going everywhere..

Just a FWIW...
When I did one of my cam plate upgrades several years ago, I noticed that my parts manuals, for two different years, listed two different oil pump scavenger o-rings. I was confused by what the differences were and which was the newest version.
Turns out, there was an older black, buna rubber o-ring #11157 and a newer yellow, viton o-ring #11293. I would suggest using a viton o-ring, whether the HD #11293 offering or aftermarket equivalent.
Funny, I believe it was Max who schooled me about the differences in the o-rings back then on another forum....
