I have to agree with cardboard. After looking at everything and riding as many as she can, she absolutely should get what she wants. She and you will not be happy with anything else. The feeling and the pride is what HD is all about and one reason why they have so many models, all of them very successful. I think the WG is the best of all, that is why I have one. Even though all HDs are great, the WG always wakes something up deep inside me that the other models don't. True, the spoked tire thing is very minor these days with the good rubber but the concern is still slightly there. After riding on and having regular flats and blow outs at speed on both spoked and cast/hogged wheels in my 53 years of life, I'm keeping my spokes. But that is a decision that came from experience. Plus, you can always change just about anything later on. Heck, if I wanted guaranteed safe, I'd just stay home. I haven't been home much.
Go with the Dyna - any model - which ever feels the best. They all pretty much go down the road the same way.
Dyna, have improved in regards to long trips and being rode worthy since my purchase of my Superglide in 04. They have a beefier front end (49mm), Swing arm, upgraded transmission and engine. Can go wrong with a Dyna.
I agree with most of the sentiments expressed on this thread and think the Wide Glide is one of the best bikes Harley has ever made. I ride an 06 Widey and a souped-up 1990 Ultra when I travel with my daughter. I do have a story to relate that you might consider regarding a new bike for your wife.
Last summer my wife decided she wanted to ride her own Harley. She is 5'6", slim, but coordinated and strong. She took the MSF course and fell in love with a Dyna Low Rider. I thought it was a perfect bike for her so we got her an 06 FXDLI. Well, it turned out that she was never able to get comfortable with it. The weight of the bike when stopped or in slow speed situations was the primary issue and once it got off vertical she had a struggle dealing with the bike. It was too much bike bike for her. We sold it and bought her an 883L and she is happier than a pig in poop and has become a very good rider.She wants to stay with the sporty for a another year or two but has recently been eyeing a slammed softtail custom for her next ride. I don't think the problem was a strength or size issue (though I may be wrong), I think it is more related to coordination and experience. We will see when she steps up in the future.
Get her what she wants ,I waited 11 years to get my HD in that time i had a japcrap and hated it traded it in with just 3300 miles on it because the old rumor that it took years to get a new Harley now i got a 04 superglide that i bought new and have cusomized to fit me and be my bike
Just curious, did she look at the Street Bob? It hasthe mini apes like the Wide Glide with a little fatter front tire, a lower seat height, and a rounded off rear fenderas apposed to the bob tail on the Wide Glide. This bike might be a little easier for her to handle. I am 6 feet tall and with the forward controls and heel rests I love it.
My intention is to one day get a second bike (Street Glide) and keep the Street Bob for my wife or boys to be able to ride with me, when they get older or if my wife shows an interest to learn to ride. This would allow me to have the Street Bob to just hop around town and the Street glide for longer trips and to ride to work
