Default Fall away, steering head bearing ... whatever

Got the bike up on a jack the other day.

Gave a go at checking the steering head bearings by just seeing how the front end reacted with no weight on it.

My bars will fall to the left (left when looking from the saddle) as soon as they cross center, but won't fall to the right until way past center. Is something wrong.

The brake rotor and caliper and all that good stuff is on the left, so it makes sense that the bars would be inclined to fall that way. Is this how it works, or should the front end "fall away" evenly from both sides. The description of how to check the bearings using the fall away test from the manual may as well be written in chinese. It makes no gawd damn sense to me.

Next time you've got your bike up, give it a try and let me know how it works out. Or dont' ... I'm just askin'.

Ray.

Did you loosen or disconnect your clutch cable?

Was the bike level on the lift?

I think, but it could've been off.

As a matter of fact, both times I've had it up, there was no weight on the right rear part of the frame. None at all. I could pull the small jack adapter/spacer thingy right out from between the frame and the the jack. .... I guess that means it wasn't level.

You need to take your clutch cable off because it is so stiff it will influence the fall away. Also you need to be level front to back. I have to put boards under my rear wheel & drop the front end a few inches to get the bike level. I measure the bottom of the tires to the floor to get the bike level.
Not being level will also cuase you to get a bogus swing on the front end.

When I've got a bit more time, I'm going to try and set it up right and see how things look.

thanks for the input.
