I'm looking to buy a 1996 model with 14Kmi from a second owner who has no records and very little history on the bike. It has a crease in the tank where it was dropped by the first owner. The story is the 1st owner died and 2nd owner bought it from the estate. The head gaskets have been replaced. I am wondering why that would have been necessary. The air intake is a SE but the owner doesn't know if the carb is original or what it is. From other pics, I think the pipes are also non-stock.
What problems should I be looking for? What will it cost to fix the tank?
The price is 8500 and it's been for sale for a few months. Would anyone like to offer some advice.
There are no guarantees in life. If you want to know more ask if you can take it to a mechanic and let them run a compression check and look at the motor for you. My buddy had a 96 WG with 30,000 he got used and it ran good.
Take it to a mechanic and have it checked out. I made the mistake of not taking mine to a mechanic before I bought it. When I finally got it on a lift I found out the frame was bent, the rear wheel didn't track correctly, and the guy told me it was just dropped also. It was obviously wrecked. The funny thing was you couldn't tell it when it was on its jiffy stand or while sitting on the bike. But after I had it on the lift it was obvious. Ended up having to be stripped and I had to send the frame off to be fixed. Cost me some extra money, but it is right now. It's a '96 FXDL with 41,000 miles on it, so don't worry about the mileage. It all worked out, I just have more money in the bike than I originally want to. I was able to strip the bike myself, if I had to take it to a shop to be done it would have broke me. Learn from my mistake and have it checked out, not only the drivetrain but the frame alignment as well. Good Luck!
