Took the inner primary out, now it's going back together. Jackshaft gear is touching the ring gear at rest. It's just enough to engage the two gears a little. Can this be correct? Doesn't seem so at first look.
I've tried the starter assy a few different ways. Right now it has the coupler with the deep side facing the transmission, short side facing out. Jackshaft jumps in and out and spins fine with clutch housing out.
update. I had the second coupler backwards. It's opposite of the inner coupler, which has an offset internal retainer clip. On that one the deep side goes toward the transmission, the short side goes outward. On the second shorter coupler that lives in the inner case race, and also has an offset internal retainer clip, it's deeper side out, shorter side in. Then the spring goes between the deeper side of this retainer clip and the starter drive gear (pinion gear). Works now.
