It has stopped leaking at least. I don't dare touch it for the oil change I had planned while out on the road. I have a heli-coil kit coming, and a new oil pan gasket for when I get home and drop the pan for repair. So far so good, fingers crossed.
Home from a 3 week 4,200 mile road adventure on my '96 FDX. Bike did fantastic in every way. It was using oil when I left, and still is, especially cruising at 75 - 80 mph for hours, but it is manageable until I can address the top end pretty soon. Got a leak down and a compression tester on the way from JEGS, and will take things from there. I see a rebuild in my future.
Anyway, the initial night before departure leak that was flipping me out stopped while out on the road. I have a Heli-coil kit and fresh gasket now, and just ordered the proper drill bit. I will drop the pan and repair it proper. No leaning the bike or climbing under it for me thanks.
So all's well that ends well I guess. Thanks again for the insight. Mission accomplished.

If you plan to pull the pan, why not replace it instead of half *** fixing it?
Pan pulled, heli-coil installed. A bit of teflon tape and a new o-ring, and no leaks. I am at peace with it.
From the "got away with that one" files... after my 4K mile tour the plug came out with fingers only, no wrench! And it wasn't leaking. A testament to ThreeBond 1182 grey seal, and my karma being in good standing I suppose.
The problem with Teflon tape in gasoline (or anything else for that matter) is, if you undo the fitting with the Teflon tape you are left with thousands of threads of Teflon that can get into whatever it is you're trying to seal. Not so bad for a kitchen faucet but very bad for a fuellubrication system..
