The problem with Teflon tape in gasoline (or anything else for that matter) is, if you undo the fitting with the Teflon tape you are left with thousands of threads of Teflon that can get into whatever it is you're trying to seal. Not so bad for a kitchen faucet but very bad for a fuel lubrication system..

Next time you pull the drain plug out, remove all the tape fragments from the plug and as much as you can from the hole. With a little luck all the fragments you don't (can't) get will end up in the filter. Reassemble without tape. An o-ring doesn't need any help sealing. If you're sealing a pipe thread, use thread dope.

Sorry didnt read the entire thread so excuse me if its redundant, but skimming I saw Teflon tape mentioned a number of times.. (I know this is stripped) but in the practice of using tape it might be helpful to know there is such a thing as heavy duty tape.. and it can make a huge difference. Its thicker and stickier. I like to use it. Might try it when traditional tape doesnt stop a leak. Its a band-aid but can get you by for a while before you address the issue properly.
