Sounds like you made some nice improvements. Ride safe out there in nasty NYC.

Yeah it's really cool to be honest, I am really enjoying my Harley a lot more these days! It's a completely new bike with ***** now! It was always quick and torque'y but now it's insane! It's really cool!

And yes, NYC sucks riding, my group is NYC based so we meet right over the GWB but I live in NJ (30 minutes away). I go from county to city in 30 miles and it's completely different driving styles! I try to encourage upper NY or NJ rides, but I don't always win. I lead the 3rd and slow/cruisers group (designed for newbs and cruisers) that don't want to go fast (so I usually get the largest group) but I'm not the founder of the group. He sets the rides and locations so I just go with the flow. I prefer the twisties and no traffic (NYC) but I don't always get my way. I work in NJ now but was on wall street and surrounding for almost 25 years and I hated it. It's like the wild west in NYC, no one cares about anyone else!

Default S&S jet question

She's running awesome now but I have 1 jet question (and I always ask for advice when I'm not 100% certain on something new). This is my 16th big twin (first EFI) now S&S carb as of last month, but almost all of my bikes were FX shovels. They were so easy to tune, usually 1 rejet and tune the AFR and good to go. My 96ci twinky however seems to be a bit more finicky to get just right. The carb was brand new with .295 intermediate jet, obviously to small. I re-jetted using a.310 and had it perfect, idle was gorgeous, pulled through EVERY RPM, and had power to spare, with no decel pop or any sneezing/hiccups and plugs were gorgeous. The problem was that I had to turn the AFR out 3 full turns which means .310 was/is to small.

This morning I re-jetted again to a .320 and retuned the AFR, idle speed, and accelerator pump. I warmed up, test drove and got it perfect again, pulls through every gear in any RPM, no sneezing or hiccups, no decel pop and plenty of power.

Here's my question, I got it perfect with the .320 and 2 FULL AFR turns. Obviously it means I need to go to the .330 jet (with needing more than 1 3/4 turns), but I have it perfect. Is it acceptable to use 2 full turns or should I go and rejet again to the next higher jet?

I mean I have it PERFECT, and the plugs are gorgeous. I have a long ride tomorrow and would like it stable and performing as best as possible with reliability so is it worth opening up the bowl again, or just leave it .320 with 2 turns? I've been building and riding Harley since the 80s, so I've tuned a ton of shovels with S&S B's, and they were never this finicky or difficult to get perfect..

I'm open to thoughts or advice, but I'm leaning towards leaving the .320 when 2 full turns and watching the plugs over time. I get no smoke at any point, so I don't think it's too rich..

Right on! That's how I was leaning, just leaving in .032 jet, running 2 turns out. Just an FYI, I was slightly off, I just checked (after my ride), and counted the turns backwards to lightly seated and it's not quite 2 full turns so it's close enough (1 x 7/8th turn from lightly seated so almost 2 turns). The plugs are beautiful, burning perfectly, beautiful color, and she pulls through every gear, at any RPM now. Before with EFI, it would only start to pull really well, when the cams picked up, closer to 3,000 RPM, but now it's strong from the get go. She's running really well now, I just got back from a 2 hour ride to help my elderly parents at their house, and it was so strong and sounds so good! I was planning to leave it and then you confirmed it, with your reply so thank you!

Just pulled the plugs to check/swap em with oil change (I'm leading a big NJ shore run tomorrow). They didn't need to be changed (they are beautiful), but I had em out already to check so I put in a new set of champions. I check/swap plugs with every oil change so this isn't unusual for me. What's interesting is the front cylinder plug was a little richer of the 2. The rear was beautiful and exactly what they should look like. This was the first time my front plug was the richer of the two (usually the rear was with EFI). It's seems with my S&S carb, the rear looks too be the better of the two.

That being said, the 'richer' plug was almost perfect and I wouldn't even have mentioned it if I didn't just swap EFI to carb. I'm mentioning it because I earlier noted that I have my carb AFR just 2 turns out but not the recommended 1 to 1 1/4 turns out.

I've ridden roughly 500 miles to 750 (no speedo but I know my ride mileage every weekend), so mileage may be off a little. But with the carb set up 2 turns, I've given enough miles to confirm the carb at 2 turns, is perfect!
