Okay, I'm admittedly lazy today but I did do a search before posting this. I know there have probably been a bazillion posts about this but I didn't find anything useful in the first few posts I read so I thought I'd create a new one.
I'm thinking about changing to a smoked tail light. I have the smoked lense kit for my turn signals and I like the look. I'm just wondering what my options are. I see that HD and Kuryakyn both have LED replacements and one or both even have an integrated turn signal option that I'm not interested in really (one of my buds has it on his lowrider and the turn signals are very difficult to see IMO). I'd want something easy to install. I might even consider just replacing the lense and bulbif that is an option.
I also read the fine print on the Kuryakyn site about the panacea light possibly being in violation of some code. I don't want to get dinged on something like this when I go for an inspection and I want to stay as safe as possible.
I'm in the same boat as you. I also have the smoked turn signals and want the brake light.
I was not wanting to get the LED one but the only lens I could find is on Ebay.

I found one lense on ebay but it only fits older bikes. I haven't really looked in the stealer stores to see what is available but I don't see anything like that in the accessories catalog. All I've found so far is the HD kit with either a chrome or black frame that I don't really care for and the Kuryakyn Panacea but I don't know if it's considered legal or not thanks to the fine print they put in the catalog. The LED's look really good and bright at night but I ride mostly in the daylight and my buddy's that I mentioned initially is really hard to pick up on - his turn signals anyway. The brake light seems okay.
I used the Kuryakyn deluxe tail light and Harley Davidson's tinted turn signal lens covers. The Kuryakynface plate for the led lights is silver and you can see the wiring through the cover, so I used flat black paintaround the led lights and inside of the cover and also painted the reflectors of the turn signals, see below.
I used a Kury lens kit. I wasn't a fan of the plastic dish covers whether they are orange, smoked or clear. This particular Kury set has the lenses sunk inside the bezel a bit. I liked the look and they were an extremely easy snap-on install. They pop off with a coin if I ever need to change a bulb.
*Sorry, guys. I just realized this question was about smoked tail lights, not turn signals. It's been a long, rainy day....*
i got the smoked tail light lens from J&Pfor a gift and and used a red non LED bulb. the bulb came in contact with the lens and melted it. the bulb eventually blew also. J&P sent a new lens and an LED for free and no more problems. the LEDs spiral back and forth also which helps with visibility.
