my fxdwg forward controls work with an engine guard. these were the stock forward controls that came on bike when purchased. i added the engine guard later with no problems.
our local bike shop has made a small adapter bracket occassionally for those bikes that will not run forward controls and the engine crash bar at the same time. it is a small bracket with holes cut to attach to the frame (and allow forward controls to mount) and two holes slightly forward to bolt the engine guard to (rolling it slightly forward from normal position - about an inch or so).
i know that hd says some forward controls and engine guards do not work together because the brake pedal and shifter pedal should hit the guard, but mine just barely misses it, so i don't have any problems.
Look at the guard in his picture. I know it's hard to tell but it looks like the guard attaches to the frame in the same spot as the forwards. Either that is much older bike or an aftermarket guard.
I just put a guard on my 06 and the lower part of the unit attached with U bolts around the down tubes allowing the forwards to be positioned in the stock location.

HD guards for models before 2006 attached to the forward mount points.
As mentioned - at least some of the guards for 2006+ models attach with u bolts.
these might fit older models - but not sure?
I have a FDXI with H-D stock forwards on with a Lindby bar and it works OK. If you have large feet, there will be some reduced clearence. Per Lindby, the monting points on the FDX and FDXWG are the same. I'm happy with my set up
