I just dropped the bike off for her 1k service. While the bike has been running pretty well, it has been running very hot, the pipes are completely blues under the heat shields already. I asked the guy in service about the free factory remap for the 07s, and if that came with the service. Another guy in service answered for him, saying it could be done if I wanted it, for free of course. He said it was to fix pinging. While, my bike has never pinged... But I am assuming that the remap will make it run richer from what I have read. That is generally how you cool down and engine and stop pinging right? Pinging is from pre-detonation, which can be caused by excess heat? My bike is not that bad. Like I said no pinging.
All that said, is there any reason that I should have rejected the re-map? My thoughts were that it will richen the mixture and help counter that lean condition they come with... but then again I am used to thinking about carburetors not EFI...
Did I do the right thing? Was there any reason to say reject the map? I am planning on moding the heck out of the whole thing later, once I sell my old bike and save up a little cash. I just plan on doing it all at once. So I will be riding stock for a little while. I would hate for performance to suffer even more… I also assumed that with the remap, if I punch-out the baffles, and it’s running a little leaner, I will be less likely to experience a power loss. Am I thinking correctly?
The "Newest" maps for the 07's are actually better than the "Torque Smoothing Calibration" that was impressed upon all new owners... Better bottom end responsiveness and smoother Torque Curve.
This is NOT a RECALL or CAMPAIGN issue, but the bikes are, if the service dept.is told by the customer about a driveability issue (Heat, Detonation, etc...), and the bike is STILL IN STOCK CONFIGURATION, then the newest (if applicable) ECM Strategy can be installed at no charge, as part of the service....
FWIW, Touring, Softailand Dyna bikes are up to the "E" flash. This is the STOCK flash, not EITMS or Stage I.
Stage and Performance ECM Strategies ARE NOT UPDATEABLE unless expressly stated by the MOCO (Torque Smoothing Calibration Program).
What do your spark plugs look like?? If the bike is running lean, I would suggest letting them remap it.
Running a little rich will never hurt anything but fuel mileage, but running too lean can burn up your engine.
I would be concerned if the pipes are "blueing" that far down. A few inches are normal.
