Have a friend who has installed a set of SE mufflers (new model 07) on his 08 FXDC and has noticed after a ride, in the darkness of his garage that the pipes were red hot (I mean glowing red...) I never noticed it with my bike and just wonder if it is normal for the pipes to get that hot.

Yep, I've seen it and when running lean I've really seen it!!
I suggest he at least pull the plugs to see how lean it's running.
I know mine where so cherry red before I thought they were gonna melt.

Not showing my age but, I've seen the same thing on exhaust stacks on the old R1820 radial aircraft engines running up for carb and magneto checks at11:00 pm. Yes I would check for lean conditions causing the extra high combustion temps.
