Been sitting here watching the forums for a while now. I've finally made up my mind to get forward controls. I've done a fairly thorough read through searching the forums. Is there any way to retain the mid controls while having forward controls installed? I really don't want to give up the option of having the mids available for use when I don't want to stretch out, as there are times where the roadracer still comes out in me and I prefer the mids for when the desire to throw it around the twisties hits.
After you have the forwards on the bike and ride, you'll never want to use the mids. I ride my wife's bike every now and then and what a difference. You fell that you just got a new bike or maybe riding someones bike.

First off, unless your legs are totally stretched out on the forwards leaving you know leverage to shift your weight, you'll be surprised how much you can still throw it around in the twisties. I'm not super-aggressive but I can tell you that I have no "chicken strips" on my back tire either and I've been running forwards almost a year now.
With that said, you can retain your mid footpegs - some people do that to give them an alternate foot position. But, you cannot maintain the mid controls with forward controls with stock parts. You'd have to get pretty inventive from a fabrication standpoint but it could probably be done. I'll bet, though, that if you tied mids and forwards together, both would be pretty damn sloppy on the shift side. Not sure about the brake side since I often do see rear brakes tied together on ATV's with a foot brake and a hand brake.
When using forward pegs, not forward controls, quite often folks get comfortable with occasional heel brake and shifting. This doesn't work for everyone.

Yep, still waiting for Herr Monk "The mid-controls-a$$hole" to chime in on this very subject. He called himself that by the way.
In this case, I have to agree. If you want to use mids to attach the twisties and don't think you can get it done with forwards, go with highway pegs instead.
I bought my 2007 Super Glide Custom in April of this year. I put the forward controls on and never looked back. You can ride the twisties just as fast and well with forward controls as with mid controls. I am 6ft 200lbs and the mid controls were incredibly cramped.
Someone here had a setup with both mids and forwards. Wish I could remember who, they posted pics. They actually had two shifters and two break levers. Looked a little crowded, but not as bad as I might have thought.
Just think about what you want more. If you want the mids just as another place to rest your feet on long trips then just going with forwards and leaving the pegs would work.
If you drive agressive, and want the forwards just for cruisin', put on highway pegs, and leave the levers on the mids. You'll be happy, and like it was said, you can ride around on the pegs using your heel to shift and break.
...Or go with option #3, sounds a little more expensive, but then you get the best of both worlds. I'll do a search, see if I can find those pics.
Thanks for all the input! I went ahead and ordered the forward controls. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that retaining the mid pegs will give me what I need for ride position variation on long rides and give me the comfortability in the twisties that I'm accustomed too. Again, many thanks to all for the inputs.
Once I get the bike back from the MoCo after the accident repairs and get all the goodies I've been buying in the month I've been without, I'll get some shots posted.
