I have a long ride planned tomorrow in the cold ... thanks you all in texas and other places for the weather updates [:@] here in the UK its about 30F ... maybe 40 in the middle of the day. I'm heading to London and back (150 miles) over the next couple of days and none of my gloves are working at keeping my hands warm, tried scuba gloves and putting some rubber ones on under my leather HD gloves but nothing is working.
The weather is clear blue skies here so I really have to go on the bike ... but will stop at the local (non-HD) bike shop and pick up some gloves tomorrow on way ... any tips as to what type I should get ? ... or is there a cheap fix I can do ? ... don't really care how it looks ... I'm going to be wearing my full helmet already ...
I use Vulkan made by IXS.
They are thermal lined & are made from Goretex soare warm & waterproof.
Picked them up from our local J&S last year - they were about ÂŁ80.00.
Colder than a witches tit up here in London. I wear Alpinestar sky gloves with thinsulate glove liners and i had to stop three times this morning on the way to work to warm myhands up, i only go 15 miles Sutton to Heathrow. Good Luck with your trip Matt.
You might also want to try putting the rubber gloves over the insulated gloves (rather than the other way around). The rubber on the outside will prevent cold air from leaking around the seams into the trapped air space that makes up the insulation of the gloves, and thus cut down on thermal transfer. It will also allow the lining of the insulated gloves to wick moisture away from your hands rather than build up between your skin and the rubber glove.
Good gauntlet style gloves with Gore-Tex linings, with a rubberized over-glove. or the chemical heat packs others suggested. Something windproof, to keep the cold air out and something to keep the warmth in(like Gore-Tex). Or if you plan to ride much, they make a "muff" or gauntlet type thing that attaches to the grips and your hands go insided them. Hard to explain...
