Default RE: Oil filter?

As far as oil filters go; u can use harley's, or better yet K&N as suggested above. Harley does not make their own filters. If I had to guess, purolator probably makes 'em for The moco.
The harley filter is way overpriced. And although the two filters are priced relitivleythe same,(K&N an moco's), the K&N is by far a superior filter. The nut alone is worth the cost of the filter.
Now onto oil. U can use any decent 20W50. The moco is incredebly full of sh*t when it comes to oil. They want you to only buy thier oils. Which incedently, are twice the cost of a compatible
brand such as castrol. Dont believe me? Heres an example.Lets take formula+primary/tranny fluid. It specifically says not for use in engine. Which implies its a different type of oil. Kinda like 5W20 and merconV for cars right? WRONG. It's 20w50 too.I used 20W50 in all 3 holes for 50K on my last bike. Never had an issue. Just more money in my pocket. The oils are both the same.

Harley motor oil.................$4.95 Harley Formula+................$6.95 (same thing as thier20w50 motor oil, different package and an extra2 dollar charge to make u believe its different)
Castrol motor oil................$2.95 Castrol 20W50..................$2.95

Harley "offically licensed" 20W50 oil and Formula+oil change.............$28.75
Castrol just as good as the officially licensed BS.............................$14.75

Just about double. As much as I love Harley's.I hate the moco. They are just so full of it.

I have a hard time believing the harley formula+ is the same as the oil. true I think you could prob run bout anything in the primary.

HD oil filter goes down to .5 micron, I dont think any other filter does, so for that reason I think HD is the filter of choice (for me). For 06 to 08.
Engine-
Amsoil SAE 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (MCV)
Royal Purple Max-Cycle 20-50 mc
Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50: or 15-50 Waly World 20 bucks deal
Red line 20-60 mc Thats going to be my final answer I think.

Transmission-
Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-140
AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR 75w-110 or 75w-140
Royal Purple Synchromax
Red Line Heavy duty
Red Line V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof
Specto new 6 sp platinum Heavy Duty (my choice)

Primary-
Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50: or 15-50 auto
B&M trick shift (syn) (my choice)
Royal Purple Max-Cycle 20-50 mc
Amsoil SAE 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (MCV)

That is some of the best choices from reading the forums and elswhere.

If you go to the oil section on the forum, there is nuff info to write a book and form a good opine/decision. Most, not all, agree HD oil is no where neer the top o the list for any app, and w the exception of the filters, citgo crap.

After a few trys, I did all mine in the 1st 2000 miles, (wasnt THAT a clean buch of fluid changes)!
Pick the ones you are going to use and stick with it.

My opine from reading these forums, which are PACKED with great info.

Probly more info that you needed

I'm getting ready to do my first oil change myself on my 06 Super Glide as soon as my service manual arrives. I was just wondering, do you buy the filter from Harley Davidson or just get a filter from somewhere likt AutoZone (if they have one that will fit)? I'm not even sure what filter I need yet because I haven't reseached it. I live quite a distance from the nearest HD dealer. It currently has the HD chrome oil filter on it. Is that one any better or different, or just chromed so it looks better?
I remember my first oil change. lol.. I dont know where your oil filter is but you can take a 2 litre bottle and cut it down so it fits all underneath your filter. Or maybe even a long piece of card board. If you don't when you take the filter off all kinds of oil will be running down the bottom of the frame and on the ground.

There are some great Ideas in the change oil forum. I would also let you bike run for 10-20 minutes so the oil comes out of the engine fast. If you do it while its cold sometimes you will have to have a few beers before it's done. LOL

I'm running a K&N oil filter. They have a part # for Dyna's (not sure what it is). They are nice because they have a nut welded to the end of the filter for removing it. The next time you do an oil change all you need is the correct size socket and you are good to go.
Now there's something all the filters should have.

I may change what I use on this fact alone.

I think that's how air filters are rated, not oil filters.
Am I wrong?

Im not that smart, but here is some info from " Oil and Oil related topics >> RE: What Brand Oil Filter"

Also=A little out of date but some GOOD info (thanks to all the posters who have unwitingly edamacated me) http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Fil...tml#OilFilters

And its 5 micron not .5, my mistake.

Here is a post from an oil filter discussion on the VTwin forum I found. After reading it you will find out why anyone with a twin cam HD engine should be using a HD five micron oil filter and NOT any other aftermarket filter. And yes, you are protected by the Magnussen Moss act, but if you use a non HD five micron oil filter and the dealer thinks the engine failure was caused by that filter, it will cost you thousands to hire an attorney to fight them. Is it worth it to save $3.00 on an oil filter. I think not!

HI all.

A few weeks back, there was a post asking about using Baldwin filters.
Wile it would seem that the whole post is now gone, this was the catalyst that started me down this path, and what I have found has quite shaken what I thought to be true, and I feel I need to pass this on to all of you here.

I will state plainly that I have no dog in the fight, I do not, nor have I ever worked for Harley Davidson, I do not even own stock in it.
My hope is to have a discussion, and though I am sure I will bend a couple noises out of joint, it is not what I am trying to do, I am only passing this on to you with the hope it will save you down the road.

I was always told by filter companies and in school, you use a filter that is made and designed for the engine and vehicle.
As we all know, or should know about our Twin cams is that the first factory oil filter is that the first design was the standard 30 Micron type, the same ones they used for the EVO and sportster engines, but they found out quickly that this cause issues in the engine, mainly, the oil feed holes to the cam tensioners would clog up, and the oil pumps could not maintain pressure.
The problems only got worse with more dirt and soot.
So the company made a new filter, a 10 Micro that solved or slowed down these Issues, until the "B" and the 06 Dyna. These Engines needed the filtration taken to the 5 Micro level, and now that the all the 07's used this, they have replaced the 10 with the new super 5 filter.

The Issue with the new tensioner design is this, the oil feed holes to the tensioners get restricted and clogged if you do not use a 5 Micron filter, is this is the reason why the company went to the new Super 5 filter.

With this all said, if you use the factory filter, you should be just fine, the problem is this, the aftermarket filters have not ben following Harley on this.
When the guy with the Baldwin question challenged my answer, I made a call to Baldwin on the tech line, what i learned in the call got me calling other filter manufactures, and well, I was dismayed.

You have to understand form a manufactures point of view, Harley's are a very small market, compared to say a Toyota or a Chevy or Dodge, but it cost the same amount of capital to gear up to make a filter and test and so on, so most filters you see listed in the Aftermarket, are in fact, filters made for cars that they feel will work. They based there estimate on the first design 30 micron filter, and found filters that had a

I got the HD filter and also the filter wrench that goes over the top. Well, the wrench broke so I took it back to the dealer and they wanted to just do an exchange. I said that I didn't like the way it was made and wanted a different kind. They didn't have one that I liked so I just got the money back for the wrench. I used a tension wrench after that and every thing went well. I also used synthetic oil.

remove the sensor before you take off the filter "just in case" do the plastic bottle method to catch the oil when remove the filter or a few rags. change to the K&N filter. You can ask the guy at autozone and barrow a filter wrench to remove the harley filter. it is a self adjusting type used with a ratchet.
