I'm getting ready to do my first oil change myself on my 06 Super Glide as soon as my service manual arrives. I was just wondering, do you buy the filter from Harley Davidson or just get a filter from somewhere likt AutoZone (if they have one that will fit)? I'm not even sure what filter I need yet because I haven't reseached it. I live quite a distance from the nearest HD dealer. It currently has the HD chrome oil filter on it. Is that one any better or different, or just chromed so it looks better?
You need a filter made for your Dyna. It doesn't have to be chrome, but they don't cost that much in the first place. Make sure you read your manual first because there are two plugs on the underside. One is for the tranny and one is for the case. Make sure you use the proper oil as well. Regular car oil isn't sufficient for your bike.

I agree with using the HD filter and while you're at the parts counter, you'll need a new O-ring also. When I did my first oil change I went to Mobil-1 20W50 that I ordered for $59.70 (6-pack) including shipping from here.
I've been reading about oil...haven't decided which oil to go with yet. I guess I should stay away from SYN3 from what I've read here. Our local AutoZone carries Mobile 1 Synthetic for motorcycles. I thought about using that. The panhead motorcycle rest stop nearby has Royal Purple...thought about that. Too many options. I will go with the HD filter. I ran Amsoil synthetic in my metric bike I had prior to the Harley. If you read all the research on motor oils and filters trying to make an educated decision on the "best" oil for your bike all you get is a headache! I guess I'll just pick one of the popular oils and go with it. Then I have to figure out what I need for the primary and tranny.
I'm running a K&N oil filter. They have a part # for Dyna's (not sure what it is). They are nice because they have a nut welded to the end of the filter for removing it. The next time you do an oil change all you need is the correct size socket and you are good to go.
I did notice that there was no way to get a regular filter wrench in there. I have another style filter wrench that goes on and a ratchet with extension attaches to it. I haven't tried it to see if it will fit. It's not the HD one. I have seen the HD filter wrench, so if mine doesn't fit, I will get one of those. Actually, I'll probably just get one anyhow.
