Well ok, then by that referance I can use 140W gear lube in my crank?
"Looking at these ranges we notice that 50w engine oil is the same “real” viscosity as 90w gear oil. So it stands to reason that they might be substituted for each other. But remember that there are other factors involved than just viscosity. The ability to withstand shear, and additives designed for a particular end use are also important.

The shear aspect and the additive packages are why some of us don’t think it’s the best idea to use the 20w-50 engine oil in a transmission. There are many reports of tranny damage where the 20w-50 was used. However, there are currently no scientific studies to prove the damage was the result of the use of those oils. You must make the decision as to your own bike.

Personally, I’ll continue to use gear oil in my tranny. There are enough differences in the engine vs. tranny applications that I feel better going that route."

Doesn’t sound like an endorsement to use one in three, just verifying its possible.
I'll stick with gear lube in the gear box, Trick shift, or if I have to crank case oil in the primary, and good motor oil in the crank. It’s to each his own of course. I will NOT be putting Shitgo in ANY vehicle I own. I am assuming HD oils are still being made by shitgo, any change in manufacture would be welcome news.

ORIGINAL: voyager1

The oil opinions go on till the end of time. I just use harley products in all 3 holes. Will prob switch the SYN ,after engine gets broke in. Many say wait till 3 to 5K before SYN. More important is to change often. Oil is pretty cheap,A new engine is not cheap . very, very few oil opinions are based on fact : Just opinions.
Well said voyager - oil is like religion! Oil companies like to sell oil so each one is "the best" and everyone seems to have different results, or perceived results from different oils. As it has been said before, most oils available today are great quality. Whatever meets or exceeds HD's specs is is probably the right thing to say at this point...[8D]
