I know there are tons of threads about diffrent oils, but considering that this is my first oil, tranny, primary lube change I want to be sure the right oil is used before pouring 8 bucks down the drain! No pun intended!!
There are three fill points:
Engine Oil Filler Neck
Trans Side Cover Oil Filler Hole
Primary Inspection Plate
My question is weather people use full syn 20W-50 in all fill points or do you do like the manual states?
Engine - 20W-50
Primary - 75W-90
Trans - 75W-90
Just need to clairify to be 100% before starting!!
I used Mobil 1 syn 15-50 from Wal-Mart ($21 5 qt jug) in the crank. SPECTRO HEAVY DUTY PLATINUM 75W140 FULL SYNTHETIC 6 SPEED GEAR LUBE MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR HARLEY DAVIDSON TRANSMISSIONS in the Trany.
B & M Synthetic Trick Shift in the primary.
Im changing to Red Line 20-50 winter and then 20-60 summer, crank-gets hot in Tx.
Royal Purple and Amsoil both have good products as well as Mobil 1.
I cant imagine putting the same fluid in all 3 holes but some do with ok results.
My shifting got LOTS smoother w the spectro/B & M combo.
Look in the oil section as mentioned for some great info.
I have a manual, but it states to use HD Transmission Fluid in the Tranny and Primary. I have heard many people state there is a ton of options with other BETTER oils, so I just wanted to clearify before pour $8 quarts of oil in holes that they can't be used in!
I like to start off by saying, I'm no wrench. I use Mobil 1 in all three holes. 20w50 Syn. in engine and primary and 75w90 gear lube in the trans. Seems to run fine, it alittle noisy on the top end but from what I understand it's common of HD.
The oil opinions go on till the end of time. I just use harley products in all 3 holes. Will prob switch the SYN ,after engine gets broke in. Many say wait till 3 to 5K before SYN. More important is to change often. Oil is pretty cheap,A new engine is not cheap . very, very few oil opinions are based on fact : Just opinions.
From the replies you've received, it's apparent you won't get clarification. The MoCo's suggested fluids are in the owners manual. Go from there and make your choices. I've put thousands of miles on bikes and never heard of synthetics. Never had a problem. I do now, run synthetic oil in the engine cause it's available.
