I'm asking this question for my friend, who after hearing my stock 2008 Lowrider, realized he had to do something to his stock 2006 Street Bob exhaust and wanted to know if anyone had any advice for a quick modification to the stock mufflers. I will be doing it in my garage. I've heard of knocking out a "freeze out" shaped plug that is in there and also grinding away or drilling holes in part of the baffles.
Any experience anyone has had, good or bad, would be appreciated. He just wants to do something right away to get some immediate deeper/louder tone to hold him over while selecting slip-ons.
By the way the HD did agreat job with the newer exhaust as his is really lame compared to mine. Night and day! I suggested that the dealer must have loads of newer mufflers and pipes laying around with all the exhausts they seem to do to alot of the new sales, I wonder what they do with all of them?
Thanks for any replys!
1)A drill bit will add some noise about 1/2" or so. little louder
2)A hole saw will take care of the plug (1 1/4" I believe). Louder
3)A hole saw will take care of the baffle removal (1 7/8") Very LOUD
4)A hole saw will take care of the whole works, plug, inner baffle, screen and packing (insulation)(2") EXTREMELY LOUD Warningdeafening)
Opinions will vary on results and the why's and why nots to do this. It is essentially a free mod, and won't hurt anything but your friends ears.

Good luck,

I just realized #4 is a real bad idea............. Your friends bike will sound like a whole herd of Harleys, he will find himself running from women and cops, and there is no turning back
He will also find that any strange noises he previous thought the bike may have had, strangely disappear
You will notice he says "Huh, what" quite a bit more often then ever before.
Your friend will probably have to move to a remote garage in the country, or purchase a quieter exhaust system
I went for option #4. I, nor any of my coworkers, think it's overly obnoxious. I took a 2" hole saw to the outer welds. And then took the slip-ons off and pounded the whole baffle out from the inside out. Works for me. I'll eventually go to an aftermarket pipe, tuner, and intake. But for now, this works.

I like #4 also, but it is deafening and it sounds (to me) pure Harley loud. Once I cut the welds the baffle screening came out fairly easily.
The packing blew out, when I fired up the bike.
I love the sound.
I suspect you and your coworkers listen to a lot of loud RockRoll music, too
I played with my stock pipes the week before I got the Rush slipons and I found drilling a few holes in that plate in the middle of the muffler gave the best sound.... not the loudest but the most pure.... I drilled the whole plate out (hole saw ) and I did not like the sound (there was a whistle in there or sort of a squeak during certain rpm ranges).
Was just experimenting but a few small holes in the baffle plate will do wonders for the sound of the bike for free(or cost of 10" drill bit extention which was like $5)
I rammed a rebar while slip-ons were off, went thru from the front to the back, sounds great, however I think is running a lil lean with K&N filter.
Just modified the stock mufflers on my brothers 08 lowrider yesterday.Took a1' holesaw with an extension and cut the plug out in the center of the baffle. Sounds great. Anythig bigger than an inch will mess up the outer part of the baffle.
